Three Community Design Projects in Tilaco, Mexico

AR30-022, Spring 2018, Construction of Three Community Design Projects, Tilaco, Mexico, resulted in built landscape projects. Three co-construction projects were built with the community, including a community garden/workshop space, an improvement to the public library entrance, and improved seating at the central square.

Kilgore Hall Raingardens

HS 272 Fall, Kilgore Hall Raingardens class consists of the development of design and construction projects, which incorporate the entire design process culminating with a complete set of construction documents, cost predictions, and built projects. Students met with University leaders to identify guiding principles form Campus Capacity and Assessment Study.

Carolina Campus Community Garden Raingarden

LAR 524, 2019, Carolina Campus Community Garden Raingarden Design and Phase 1 build, Chapel Hill, NC. The Carolina Campus Community Garden (CCCG) is a program of the North Carolina Botanical Garden where they grow vegetables and fruit so that all UNC employees have access to fresh, sustainably grown produce. This is made possible through the shared efforts of staff, students, faculty, and local residents.  The garden serves as a learning community for developing gardening skills, healthy living, social responsibility, and interdisciplinary academic pursuits.

Rocky Branch Artful Restoration – Summer 2018

LAR 524, Summer 2018, Rocky Branch Artful Restoration is an urban creek that runs more than a mile through NC State’s campus and drains into Walnut Creek, a tributary of the Neuse River. Nearly ten years ago, NC State partnered with NC Sea Grant to implement a three-phase restoration project of Rocky Branch.

La Loma Community Greenspace Improvements

AR95-032, Fall 2017, La Loma Community Greenspace Improvements, Queretaro, Mexico, resulted in built landscape projects. The class worked with the community to co-design, fundraise, and co-build landscape projects with, and for the community. A small neighborhood entrance was improved, a pocket park was developed, and a children’s play areas was developed.

Beginning and Beyond Development Center Entrance

LAR 524, Summer 2016, Beginning and Beyond Development Center Entrance Renovation, Raleigh NC. Received 2016 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Public Service. The North Carolina State University’s summer 2015 classes in Landscape Architecture Construction, Materials, and Methods and Planting Design integrated meaningful community service with instruction and reflection that enrich their learning experience, modeled civic responsibility, and strengthen the community.

North Carolina Museum of Art Bulb Garden

LAR 401, Spring 2016, North Carolina Museum of Art Bulb Garden, Raleigh, NC. During the HS 401 construction studio, I developed funding and partnerships that allowed my students to work with Dr. De Hertogh, the world leader in bulb cultivation, to create a stunning garden as the central feature for the NC Museum of Art’s Art in Bloom event in 2016. 

NC Association of Physicians Assistants Veterans Garden

HS 401, Spring 2016, NC Association of Physicians Assistants Veterans Garden, Durham, NC. Memorial gardens pay tribute to fallen heroes, provide a place of remembrance for friends and families, and reflect the place and the people who developed them. Students worked with NC Association of Physicians Assistants stakeholders (mostly veterans) to develop and integrate the existing gardens and the adjacent area that contains a statue by artist, John Prazen, a Korean War veteran and Navy corpsman (USS Sperry).
