HS 401 Landscape Construction Studio
This course is an advanced course that simulates a real–world design office. Students apply the whole landscape design process including community engagement, culminating in a construction project. It is where students get to develop their creative problem-solving abilities and apply their foundational skills.
The projects for this course are different every year and may require government approvals, financial procurement, and strategic coordination with stakeholder communities and landscape contractor industry members who partner with us to build them. This course requires students to be prepared with foundational skills, but more importantly with a willingness to be independent learners and critical thinkers. On the side of the instructor, this requires mastery of all aspects of the landscape profession, and ability to manage projects like a business, and all must be delivered in a pedagogical context. Completed built projects must ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the users while providing valuable environmental services.
